​​​​The award-winning Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant (SWWTP) provides wastewater treatment for the eastern parts of the City of Dallas. It is recognized by state and federal agencies for consistently producing effluent (treated wastewater) that meets all quality standards. SWWTP is part of the Dallas Water Utilities' wastewater system, which consists of more than 4,000 miles of pipeline and two wastewater treatment plants (Central and the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plants). The system serves approximately 1.4 million people across 11 neighboring customer cities, with treatment plants processing up to 450 million gallons of wastewater each day.

Dallas' water infrastructure has evolved significantly over the past century. In 1876, private owners developed the city's first public water supply. Construction of the city's first sewers followed in the 1880s, primarily to provide stormwater drainage. During this period, all stormwater runoff and untreated domestic sewage flowed directly into the Trinity River. In 1915, the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWWTP) began operations to serve a community of 100,000. SWWTP was added in 1964 to account for the ever-growing population in the Dallas area.
