  Sanitation Services
  Environmental Management System - Objectives/Measures

The Department of Sanitation Services is a 7-day a week operation serving approximately 240,000 residents.  The Department has approximately 500 pieces of equipment that travels 4+ million miles a year.
In 2006, the Department anticipates future declines in environmental incidents (see chart below for 2005 Environmental Spills).  This will be ascertained through continued employee training on pre/post trip inspections and environmental awareness.
Additionally, the Department contracted with United Recycler Services to place two (2) 50 gallon drums at each facility (excluding 3112 Canton) for the collection of oil absorbents.  In 2005, the Department recycled approximately 200 gallons of absorbents.

  • Reduce waste and the depletion of resources

Compliance Objectives
The Office of Environmental Quality (OEQ) initiated an environmental compliance program in 2004.  The program consists of conducting formal compliance assessments of City Departments.  A compliance assessment determines which environmental laws and regulations apply to a Department’s facilities and whether the facility is currently managing its compliance requirements.

Listed below is an outline of the assessments conducted by OEQ for the Department of Sanitation Services:

  • March 30, 2005 - Southwest Service Center
    • August 26, 2005 - Sanitation submitted a memorandum responding and compiling with all recommendations from OEQ
  • April 12, 2005 - Northwest Service Center
    • August 26, 2005 - Sanitation submitted a memorandum responding and compiling with all recommendations from OEQ
  • November 28, 2005 – McCommas Bluff Landfill
    • This assessment is currently being reviewed by staff.
  • November 2005 – Southwest Transfer Station
    • This assessment is currently being reviewed by staff.
  • November 2005 – Northeast Transfer Station
