Residents in four Dallas neighborhoods are participating
in the City's Recycling Demonstration Program to evaluate the use of an additional roll cart for recyclable items and once-a-week garbage collection on Wednesdays.
Residents in the test areas
received 96-gallon roll carts for recycling.
The program is ‘single stream,' which means the recyclable items don't require separation—recyclable items can be thrown in the cart
mixed together.
Neighborhoods testing the program are The Citadel (in North Dallas), Claremont (in Far East Dallas), Lake
Cliff (in North Oak Cliff) and Bryan Place (in Old East Dallas).
The City Council approved the pilot program in June 2004. The program includes recommendations from the Mayor's Recycling Task Force, which presented its report
to the Council in August 2003. The Recycling Demonstration Program will help the City Council decide what type of recycling and garbage collection program might work best for Dallas in the
future. Sanitation customers not participating in the pilot program can participate in the city's current citywide residential ‘Blue Bag' recycling program. All Dallas residents can take recyclable items to a transfer
station or the McCommas Bluff Landfill. Recycling ‘igloos' located throughout the city are also available. Recycling Demonstration Program participants with questions are encouraged to
call Sanitation Services at (214) 670-4475.
