Safe Light DallasRed Light Camera Safety Program
How to Prevent a Red Light Violation

Dallas experienced 1,737 red light accidents with 6 fatalities and 973 injuries in 2007.

A comprehensive Red Light Camera Program will change driver behavior, save lives and promote safety in the City of Dallas.

Making a right turn correctly on RED is simple:

  • Come to a complete stop behind the stop bar and crosswalk
  • Look both ways before entering the intersection
  • Look for pedestrians in the crosswalks
  • Proceed with caution when safe
  • If a right turn on red is allowed.

The INCORRECT way to make a right turn on red is shown in the video below.  REMEMBER:  A rolling right turn is not a safe or correct way to make a right turn.

Correct Stop on RED

Stopping at a red light correctly is simple (see picture):

  • Remember - Yellow does not mean speed up
  • Stop behind the stop bar and crosswalk
  • Look for pedestrians in the crosswalk
  • Look both ways
  • Wait for green light
  • Proceed with caution when safe

The INCORRECT way to stop at a red light is shown in the video below. Please view the vehicle in the far right lane.

According to a survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation and American Trauma Society, 63 percent of Americans witness a red light running incident more than once a week.

Driving is a privilege NOT a right

Since our program began, the number of red light citations issued per camera site has dropped 72% on average.  This indicates that the red light program has made dramatic changes in driver behavior, which is our goal.

A combination of Engineering, Education and Enforcement will reduce red light running in Dallas and save lives.
