Department Functions

The Emergency Operations Division provides fire protection, rescue capabilities, and basic emergency medical service to the citizens of Dallas.  With adequate staffing of 55 fire stations and 75 major companies, effective fire protection is maintained during response to over 100,000 emergency calls per year.  Emergency Operations trains and equips designated firefighters to provide hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and aircraft rescue.

The Emergency Medical Services Division is responsible for 24-hour emergency medical treatment and transportation to medical facilities by supporting 32 front-line Rescues (MICU's), 9 additional MICUs during peak demand, 2 paramedic-equipped Engines, and ten reserve units.  MICUs are staffed with firefighters who are crossed-trained and State-certified Paramedics.  EMS provides an average response time of 5.3 minutes for nearly 148,000 calls per year.

The Communications Division receives and processes over 3.4 million emergency fire, rescue, EMS, police, and non-emergency service calls.  This division also provides emergency warning, response, planning and preparedness education to the citizens of Dallas.

The Fire Administration Division provides training and professional development of veteran firefighters and new trainees to meet the standards set by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.  This Division also provides development and administration of in-service training programs and drills, a driver improvement program, a physical exercise weight program, and testing/training of new fire equipment and procedures.

The Fire Prevention, Education & Inspection Division provides services to reduce the occurrence of fire and fire deaths or injuries though municipal code development and enforcement; through State criminal law enforcement; through public safety awareness; and through specialized counseling of juvenile firestarters.
