(Note: If you are calling from outside of the area, call 1-888-312-4567, toll free.)
Counseling
FEMA Toll Free Crisis Counseling Hotline 1-800-621-FEMA / (TTY 1-800-462-7585) The purpose of the crisis counseling program is to help relieve any grieving, stress, or mental health problems caused or aggravated by the disaster or its aftermath. These short-term services are only available to survivors of declared major disasters. (You may also call 2-1-1 for information about local health and human services resources.)
Hurricane Katrina Crisis Hotline (United Healthcare) Callers can speak with counselors to help them handle the difficult emotions they may experience such as stress, anxiety and the grieving process. Callers also may receive referrals from a national database of community resources to help them with specific concerns, such as financial and legal issues. Callers who may have suffered physical trauma or symptoms will be transferred to a nurse who will be able to provide health education and decision support regarding the need for medical treatment

SPCA of Texas (972) 562-7297, ext 123 362 S. Industrial Blvd. Dallas, TX 75207 The SPCA will take in animals whose owners are temporarily living in shelters in the Metroplex if the animals are already spayed or neutered and vaccinated or if the owners agree to have the pets spayed or neutered and vaccinated while in the SPCA's care. Space is limited. To apply for this program, please call the number appearing above.

Dallas Independent School District Hurricane Hotline: (972) 925-5555 The Dallas Independent School District is honored to open our school doors to students displaced by the storm and recent disaster. Parents may enroll their children at DISD schools with or without documentation. The district will be working to get this and further information to these families in whatever way possible, and we urge those with access to a phone to call the above hotline for further information."
Helping Young Children Cope with Trauma The American Red Cross has provided this document, with advice on how to help children of different ages cope with loss, grief and dislocation.
Public Transportation
Dallas Area Rapid Transit (214) 979-1111 DART provides bus and light rail service throughout Dallas and to many of its suburbs. It also connects to the Trinity Railway Express with service to Fort Worth. Use the online trip planner, call the number above or find local bus schedules at most Branch libraries. A more complete collection of route schedules is available at the Central Library or at one of the DART offices.
