Childhood lead poisoning is a major preventable environmental health problem in the United States.

Lead is a heavy metal.  Lead is a poison. It can slow mental and physical growth. Children under 6 years of age are at most risk because the developing nervous system is very vulnerable to lead’s effects.

Lead was banned from house paint in 1978.  U.S. food canners quit using lead solder in 1991.  Lead in gasoline, phaseout reached its goal in 1995.

BE LEAD SAFE   - prevent or reduce your child’s exposure to lead as much as possible.

Symptoms of lead poisoning

Headaches
Muscle and joint weakness or pain
Excessive tiredness or lethargy
Behavioral problems or irritability
Difficulty concentrating
Loss of appetite
Abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting
Anemia
Constipation

Major Lead Contaminator Sources

Lead Paint
Soil
Dust
Water
Other (glazed pottery, plastic blinds (some made outside USA), folk medicine, lead  bullets, fishing sinkers and some cosmetics)

Blood Lead Screening Guidelines for Texas Children

  • It is recommended that all children have a blood lead test at
    12 and 24 months
    (Required for Medicaid/THSteps clients)
  • Report all blood lead result to Texas Department of States Health Services Childhood Lead Registry

Local Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

Provides the following services: home visit and follow up for elevated lead levels; referral for environmental home inspections;  health education/nutritional teaching; and presentations.
