Cease the Grease This Holiday Season

After you deep fat fry your holiday turkey, what do you do with all the left over fry oil? Free Drop-off Locations!

It’s that time of year again.  In recent years, fried turkey dinners have become a celebrated part of the holiday season.  To fry the average size turkey requires using up to five gallons of cooking oil. More often than not, used cooking oil is improperly disposed of by dumping it into storm drain inlets or pouring it directly into plumbing systems. Both means can cause costly clogged pipes, sanitary sewer overflows and damage to our waterways.

Dallas Water Utilities and Public Works and Transportation’s Storm Water Management Program have partnered to advise citizens in the proper disposal of used cooking oil.
Here are a few ways:

Filter and freeze used cooking oil for reuse.

Pour used cooking oil into a rigid plastic container with a screw top lid (you can use the bottle it came in) for drop off at one of four Sanitation Services Drop-Off Centers or the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center.  Soak up small amounts of grease and oil with a paper towel then throw it into the trash.
