Boards and Commissions

General Qualifications
  • Dallas resident for 6 months
  • Qualified voter at time of appointment
  • No criminal record considered by Council so serious as to disqualify
  • Generally, not an adversary party to litigation against the City
  • Not in arrears in city taxes, water service charges, other obligations
  • Creditable record of attendance and service for any prior board
  • Individuals serving 4th and final term may not be reappointed to the same board
  • Specific boards have special qualifications

APPPOINTMENT TIMELINE
  • August 1st– recommended date for application to be received by City Secretary
  • September 21st – recommend date to begin appointments
  • Briefing meetings – recommend for full council and/or individual appointments
  • Regular meetings – recommend for individual appointments

Individual Councilmember Appointments

Full Council Appointments
  • 26 Boards with varying number  of members appointed by the city council
  • Some are shared with other agencies
  • Councilmembers may nominate individuals for as many positions as are available on a board
  • 14 Boards have special qualifications

DART and DFW Boards
  • DART Terms and Appointment Cycle
    • - Terms expire July 1
    • - 9 City of Dallas positions:
      • 6 positions expire in odd-numbered years
      • 2 positions + a shared position expire in even numbered years
  • Identify nominee by place number
  • September 6th – recommend deadline applications to be received by City Secretary
  • October 3rd – forward nominees to  Transportation and Environment Committee
  • November 2nd – recommend date to appoint

DART AND DFW Boards
  • DFW Terms and Appointment Cycle
  •     - Terms expire January 31
    • - 7 City of Dallas positions
      • 3 Expire in odd-numbered years
      • 3 expire in even-numbered years
      • 7th position is the Mayor
  • October 3rd – recommend applications to be received by City Secretary
  • December 5th – forward nominees to Transportation and Environment Committee
  • January 18th – recommend date to appoint

HOLDOVER ISSUES
  • Holdover – a board member whose term has expired may holdover in office indefinitely if no one is ever appointed or qualified to fill the position.
  • September 1, all boardmembers will be considered “Holdovers”
    • (except D/FW and some DART members)
