ADOPTION OF THE 2006

Step 1
  •          International Code Council
  •    The family of International Codes are  promulgated by the International Code Council.

Step 2
  •  Recommended amendments from the
  •  North Central Texas of Government’s Code
  •  Correlating Committee & Fire Advisory
  •  Board (COG) are reviewed for applicability
  •  to our jurisdiction.

Step 3
  •  COG’s recommended amendments are
  •  reviewed to determine if they are
  •  contradictory to any current Dallas codes or
  •  amendments. If any contradictions are found,
  •  the amendment is either rejected or
  •  accepted, taking into consideration the
  •  optimum fire safety protection for our Dallas
  •  citizens.

Step 4
  •    Once it’s determined that the proposed COG amendments meet our requirements and needs, we compare them to the current codes of the Dallas Building Code.


  •   The Dallas Fire Code and the Dallas Building Code must be compatible in their application.

Step 5
  •   The modified code is reviewed by the Fire Code Advisory and Appeals Board for approval, rejection or additional modifications.

Step 6
  •   Once approved by the Fire Code Advisory and Appeals Board, it is submitted to the City Attorney for review.

  •                 It is presented to “You”


  •        THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE

Step 8
  •   The proposed new 2006 Dallas Fire Code  is submitted to the Dallas City Council for approval. If approved, it is “ADOPTED.”

  • IFC 2003 CHAPTER 6
  • BUILDING SERVICES AND SYSTEMS
  •   603.4 Portable unvented heaters. Portable unvented fuel-fired heating equipment shall be prohibited in occupancies in Groups A, E, I, R-1, R-2, R-3 and R-4.
  •      Exceptions:
    • 1. Listed and approved unvented fuel-fired heaters in one-and two-     family dwellings.
  •   2. Appliances approved for temporary use during construction          processes are allowed, provided such capacity does not exceed the     terms of the listing of the appliance.
  • 605.10 Portable, electric space heaters.  Portable, electric space heaters shall comply with Sections 605.10.1 through 605.10.4.
  • 605.10.1 Listed and labeled.  Only listed and labeled portable, electric space heaters shall be used.

"605.10.2 Power supply"
  • 605.10.2 Power supply.  Portable, electric space heaters shall be plugged directly into an approved receptacle.


  • 605.10.3 Extension cords.  Portable, electric space heaters shall not be plugged into extension cords.
  • 605.10.4 Prohibited areas.  Portable, electric space heaters shall not be  operated within 3 feet (914 mm) of any combustible materials.  Portable, electric space heaters shall be operated only in locations for which they are listed.
