Dallas departments partner to offer DALLAS (Nov. 17, 2005) It’s that time of year again. In recent years, fried turkey dinners have become a celebrated part of the holiday season. To fry the average size turkey requires using up to five gallons of cooking oil. More often than not, used cooking oil is improperly disposed of by dumping it into storm drain inlets or pouring it directly into plumbing systems. Both means can cause costly clogged pipes, sanitary sewer overflows and damage to our waterways. Dallas Water Utilities and Public Works and Transportation’s Storm Water Management Program have partnered to advise citizens in the proper disposal of used cooking oil. Here are a few ways: · Filter and freeze used cooking oil for reuse. · Pour small amounts (less than one gallon) of used cooking oil into a suitable close-lid container while soaking up small amounts with a paper towel depositing them into the trash. Dallas Water Utilities will provide grease disposal bags upon request. · Take larger amounts generated by residential use only (in containers of up to five gallons) to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center (HC3) in Dallas. HC3 is a pick-up point only, and does not make site visits for retrieval. Contact HC3 at 214.553.1765 to get their operating hours. · Also, you may check the yellow pages for “recycling” or rendering companies that recycle cooking grease and food by-products. For more information, contact Public Works and Transportation, Storm Water Management Department at 214.948.4022 or Dallas Water Utilities, Pretreatment Division at 214. 670.6749.
