"Memories of Guanajuato" 50 years of photography, 1890-1940 At the Ice House Cultural Center January 22 - February 19, 2005

DALLAS (January 14, 2005) - The Ice House Cultural Center presents "Memories of Guanajuato, 50 years of photography, 1890-1940" from January 22 through February 19, 2005. An opening reception will be held on Saturday - January 22, 2005 from 3:00 p.m. -6:00 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

"Memories of Guanajuato, 50 years of photography, 1890-1940" is an exhibition of thirty-five (35) silver gelatin print photos from the collection of the Cultural Institute of the State of Guanajuato, Mexico. The photography exhibit is provided via the Government of the State of Guanajuato and documents fifty years of life in Guanajuato by means of portraits and city landscapes. This exhibition is on display in Dallas through the collaboration of Casa Guanajuato, Arte Oak Cliff and the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs-Ice House Cultural Center.

The mission of Guanajuato´s Cultural Institute is to strengthen and energize the cultural life of the people of Guanajuato in order to preserve, disseminate and increase their artistic expression and to promote within the community the recreation and enjoyment of their cultural patrimony. This current exhibition is part of the Institute's Cultural Program of Support for Migrants, which promotes the diffusion of the entity's cultural archives in coordination with associations of Guanajuato´s citizens residing throughout the United States, known as Casas Guanajuato. The intention of the program is to preserve the sense of identity and belonging among the Mexican migrant population and to satisfy the need for pride in, and enjoyment of, their culture through artistic outreach programs, art exhibits and conferences, among other activities.

Casa Guanajuato, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support and services for citizens of the state of Guanajuato, Mexico living in Dallas. Arte Oak Cliff which was created in 1998 as a non profit organization is focused on providing community based arts and cultural programming in the Oak Cliff community and support to Dallas area Latino artists and organizations through their work at the Ice House Cultural Center. The Ice House Cultural Center opened in 1997 and provides a Latino focused venue to enrich the quality of life of the community through arts and cultural events that reflect the diversity of Oak Cliff and the surrounding Dallas communities. Programs are presented in coordination with several arts and community organizations.
