City primed to treat icy road
conditions
Weather Forecast predicts rain and freezing temperatures
December 6, 2005 (DALLAS)
The National Weather Service has issued a forecast for the local area
that is expected to include decreasing temperatures and possibly
freezing precipitation, which might result in commuters experiencing
hazardous road conditions for the next few days.
The Street Services Department will have crews on duty and on telephone
standby around the clock to respond and treat the city’s roadways. Sand
and salt mixtures will be applied to bridges, inclines and intersections
on most thoroughfares as a de-icer to improve traction and for snow and
ice abatement.
The commercial product Meltdown 20 will be used as an anti-icer in the
Central Business District and on the Trinity River viaducts and bridges.
Meltdown 20 is a colorless, odorless fast acting, environmentally safe
product. Both anti-icers and de-icers are used to help traffic move
safely and expeditiously. Other areas critical to public safety, health,
service delivery and in emergency situations will also be treated.
The department has established routes for all of the above locations to
insure critical areas are covered. Citizen calls for assistance should
be made through 3-1-1. Activation of additional personnel for the
911/311 Communications Center will assist in the overall coordination of
response operations.
If conditions should worsen, commuters should avoid getting out on the
roads unless it is absolutely necessary and DART should be used as an
alternative. Those who must use the roadways should exercise extreme
caution. Moreover, lowered speeds, seatbelts use and defensive driving
are imperative.
To avoid unnecessary trips, consult your local media for school and
business closures, late openings and DART service delivery information.
