City of Dallas to Spray Again in East Oak Cliff on August 2 Dallas – The City of Dallas will spray an area near Cedar Crest Golf Course, as a result of a mosquito collection that tested positive for West Nile virus and its proximity to other positive mosquito collections. These recent positive samples bring the total number of mosquito collections and birds tested that are positive for West Nile virus to 13 and indicate that the virus is widespread in the City of Dallas. City staff will spray after 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2005, and will end spray treatment before 6 a.m. the following morning (see map). The area to be sprayed is bordered on the north by Van Cleave Drive, Kiest Boulevard, Magna Vista Drive, Tips Boulevard, Southern Oaks Boulevard and Overton Road. On the east, the boundary is Julius Schepps Freeway (IH-45). On the south, Illinois Avenue East and Fordham Road are the limits and on the west, Sunnyvale Road. Wind speeds below 10 miles per hour and temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees are required for spraying to be effective. Dallas residents are urged to take precautions against mosquito bites by reducing outdoor activity during evening and nighttime hours. Residents who are going outside during these times should cover their arms and legs and use a mosquito repellant. Residents should eliminate standing water to prevent mosquito breeding and the spread of the West Nile Virus. Standing water can be found in swimming pools that are not kept clean, ponds, pet watering dishes, birdbaths, potted plants, old tires, empty containers, toys and clogged rain gutters. To report standing water or mosquito problems, Dallas residents should call 311. For additional information about Mosquito Control, visit the City’s website. ###
