Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Mural Public
Art Project Completed in June of 2005

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center features mural by noted local artist. The goal of this project was to create a narrative work of art celebrating the African American community through the use of color, pattern, line and movement.

Local artist, Bernice Montgomery used the accomplishments of notable Civil Rights activist from Dallas as well Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as points of reference. The mural activates most of the long continuous wall in the lobby space; leading from the front entrance to the rear entrance of the Core Service Building, illustrating images reflective of a range of cultural events (contemporary as well as historical). It is relevant not only to the immediate community but also to the City of Dallas as a community.

Throughout the foreground of the mural, various groups of people hold hands while parts of the preamble are represented sublimely at the top of the artwork among the clouds, creating continuity to the narrative movement of images. This work reflects an artistic interpretation of history, hopefulness and faith while promoting awareness. The MLK Community Center is located at 2922 MLK Jr. Boulevard, Dallas 75215. The mural can be viewed Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

This project was administered through the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Public Art Program.
