Latino Cultural Center to receive Sculpture by Colombian Artist, Fernando Botero on Loan from Pan American Art Gallery

The Pan American Art Gallery has entered into an agreement with the Latino Cultural Center to lend a sculpture by renowned Colombian artist, Fernando Botero. The sculpture, entitled Reclining Woman, will be on loan at the center for one year. The unveiling will take place at a press conference on Thursday, June 9th at 10:00 am. The Center is located at 2600 Live Oak St. Call 214-670-3320 for more information. The public is cordially invited.
Botero, whose works have been exhibited beside those of Michelangelo, Celini and Giambologna, is considered one of Latin America’s most notable artists of the 20th century. Appropriating themes from all of art history- from the Middle Ages, the Italian quattrocento, and Latin American colonial art to the modern trends of the 20th century- Botero transforms them to his own particular style. His works reflect his search to give presence and reality to the concept of volume. Known for the exaggerated volumes in his subject matter and distinctive style of smooth shapes with unexpected shifts in scale, Botero’s paintings and sculptures are instantly recognizable. The parameters of proportion in his world are innovative and almost surprising.

Born in 1932 in Medellín, Colombia, Fernando Botero became interested in painting at an early age. By the time he was 17 he contributed illustrations to the Medillín newspaper, El Colombiano. In 1951 he moved to Bogota, Colombia where he held his first one-man show. By his mid 30s he had accumulated enough work for his first retrospective show, which took place at the Milwaukee Museum. His use of rotund figures as his subject matter has made his work synonymous with his name. Botero is perhaps the best-known living Latin American artist in the world and one of the most important figures of late-20th century art.

The Pan American Art Gallery was established in 1994 in Dallas, but it originally opened its doors in 1990 as Galleries Malraux in Los Angeles.
