Pig Races at the State Fair

Got an urge to corral a Corny Dog or hankering to say “Howdy Folks” like Big Tex? Then it’s time to head for the State Fair of Texas. This year’s theme, “Let Yourself Go!” beckons everyone to experience the biggest state fair in the nation, September 30 - October 23. “This could be another record-breaking year,” says Sue Gooding, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the State Fair. “The events and attractions in store for 2005 are amazing!”

Get wiggly with it when Pig Races, back by popular demand, hog the spotlight in the Pan American Arena. “Everyone hams it up cheering on the pig with their chosen color,” according to Ms. Gooding.

Elvis appeared at the State Fair of Texas October 11, 1956Swivel, twist and boogie through “The American Music Scene” at the Texas Hall of Fame, a salute to Elvis, Bob Dylan, Texas Blues musicians and others who’ve made a note-worthy impact. Don’t miss “The King’s Ransom,” a mammoth collection of Elvis’ own keepsakes, extravagant gold jewelry and household items from Graceland.

Dig the State Fair Fall Garden Exhibition, an annual competition among 50 landscaping and nursery companies who have designed 100 mini-gardens throughout Fair Park. See who’s earned bragging rights to the most beautiful median strips, fountain bases and walkways.

Shout out “Oohs” and “Oz” for Wicked, the State Fair Musical at the Music Hall. It’s the story of the girls who became the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

Kids and fun at the State FairCrunch on fried marshmallows, jalapeno corny dogs or other unique treats introduced at the State Fair each year. Yum your way through the “Taste & See” Pavilion, choc-full of celebrity chef demonstrations, wine tastings and more.
